General Information

Become an AYSO Referee

Referees are absolutely crucial—without them, there are no games. PHMSA is an all-volunteer league, and we rely on parents to step up to ensure a successful soccer season. AYSO provides all the training and ongoing support—no prior experience is needed. Youth referee positions are also available, allowing youth aged 10 to 18 to get involved and develop their skills in officiating.

Why Referee?

Refereeing with AYSO is a rewarding way to be involved in your child’s sport while promoting fair play and sportsmanship. Referees enjoy great exercise, have the best seat in the house, and can schedule games around their availability.

To ensure all games are covered by qualified and certified referees, PHMSA developed the Team Points Program. Teams collect points for every game their referees officiate. 6U and 8U teams must have at least one referee per team, while every team 10U and above must have a minimum of two certified referee volunteers designated at the beginning of the season to ensure the matches are properly covered. Learn more about the Team Points Program.

How to Get Started?

To become an AYSO referee, you must first register as a volunteer, pass a background check, get fingerprinted, and complete technical training certification, which typically takes place over two evenings and part of a weekend day before the season begins. Once certified, you’ll receive access to the online Ref Scheduler platform to self-assign games based on your availability.

Sign up today and start making a difference!

Advice for youth referees and other volunteers.
  1. Additional Volunteer Users - users volunteering outside of the registration system will volunteer his/herself or add a new user to volunteer.  If the volunteer now becomes an additional user, he/she will want to log in to the email account that was used to register the person as an additional volunteer and accept the invite to create a Username/Password on Blue Sombrero to get them access to AYSOU.
  2. AYSOU Certifications - Certifications will port over from the old AYSOU to the new one once the user volunteers, based on the system recognizing the volunteer ID.  If the certifications do not port over, there is a mismatch in the ID.  To ensure the best results DO NOT CREATE another account.
  3. All volunteers must have their own account tied to their own unique email address.  A youth watching the videos on a parent's account or a spouse watching the videos and doing the courses on their spouses' account will not count and we cannot award credit after the fact.
