Become an AYSO Coach

AYSO Coaches are the heart of the team. PHMSA is an all-volunteer-run league, and we rely on parents and community members to step up and make each season a success. Our coach volunteers help guide our players to enhance their ball skills, learn the rules of the game, develop good sportsmanship, and overall have fun playing soccer! Whether you're an experienced coach or new to the game, AYSO offers all the tools and training you need to succeed.

Why Coach?

Coaching allows you to make a positive impact on children’s lives, teaching them valuable life skills through soccer. It's a great way to give back to the community, connect with your child’s team, and help foster a love of the game. AYSO provides training, coaching manuals, and ongoing support to help you every step of the way.

How to Get Started?

To become a coach, you need to register as a volunteer, complete a background check, fingerprinting, and online certifications, and attend AYSO's coach training. Once you're certified, you can be paired with a team, and you're ready to get started!

Sign up today and start making a difference!

Coach Responsibilities:

1. Fulfill the AYSO coach training, including a state-required background check and fingerprinting. Brand new coaches can expect to commit 6-8 non-consecutive hours to training, which can be easily achieved prior to the start of the season.

2. Attend the in-person age-appropriate coaching course for training on how to coach.

3. Conduct a team meeting with parents. Work with the Team Manager to fill in the volunteer sheet.

4. Work with the Team Manager to distribute practice and game schedules and league information to parents.

5. Attend uniform/equipment distribution night(s) prior to the season to receive team uniforms and equipment.

6. Conduct appropriate training sessions – 2 sessions per week prior to season start, 1 training session and 1 game per week once games begin.

7. Promote the AYSO philosophy.

8. Communicate with the PHMSA board as needed on all coaching matters.

9. Teach age-appropriate skills (found in the coaches handbook).

10. Follow Safe Haven (coach training course) guidelines and principles.

11. Provide player evaluations to the division coordinators at the end of the season.

12. Have FUN!
